Useful Formulas

2D Objects Area & Perimeter

triangle

Area = 1/2b(h)

Perimeter = a + b + c

rectangle

Area = L(W)

Perimeter = 2L + 2W

Area = πr^2 (or pi * r squared)

Perimeter (circumference) = πd

π 3.14

3D Objects Volume & Surface Area

Volume = x(y)(z)

SA = 2xy + 2xz + 2yz

Volume = πr^2(h)

SA = 2πr^2 + 2πr(h)

Volume = 1/3(πr^2(h))

SA = πr^2 + πr(l)

Volume = 4/3(πr^2)

SA = 4πr^2

Other Useful Formulas and Information

To measure out a right angle (90 deg) use the 3-4-5 meathod. By measuring one side to three units (any unit of measure just make sure to use the same) and the other side to four units, you will have a right angle when those two points measure 5 units apart.

1 cubic ft = 7.8 gallons

1 gallon of water = 8.35 lbs

It is best to turn over the volume of water your pond holds once every one to two hours.

For waterfalls and streams, your pump should pump at least 100 gallons per hour for every inch wide the waterfall is. For more noise and "white-water" from your falls, increase the flow rate to 200 gallons per hour per inch of waterfall width.

For most sand and gravel material 1 cubic yard equals 1.5 tons.

1 ton of material covers about 100 square feet 2 inches thick.
