Construction of a Fire Ring

Before constructing a fire ring, be sure to check local ordinances to see if you are able to have an open fire. Some municipalities have outlawed having an open fire without some sort of cover over it. If that is the case a chimnea or other patio furnace would be the only acceptable way to go.

 

Construction

• Use  a compactable gravel to build a pad. The top of the pad should be at least 1” below grade.
• Using  a center stake lay out stone or blocks in the desired radius from the center stake to the inside face of each stone or block. Slight movement of the individual pieces may be required for the best alignment of the circle.
• Build additional height by adding layers of stones or blocks. The joints of the pieces must be staggered for each layer. It is preferred that the center of each piece in one layer be above the joint of the two stones below it. Note: The top layer should be laid with the smooth side up and glued to the layer below.
• When the stone circle is at your desired height and the adhesive has set, fill the center of the circle, with clean porous rock that will drain easily, to a level that will allow the steel barbecue ring rest upon the fill rock and be inside the circle of the stones.
   

 

Tips

Concrete and stone will crack when exposed to extreme heat. Line the sides of the pit with fire brick.

Lava gravel works great in the base of the fire pit.

Fire rings can be dangerous- the metal can get extremely hot-please keep an eye on children, both large and small!!

If burning wood, some types will pop and spark. Have a 5 gallon bucket of water on hand for embers outside of the pit.
